[Bethany Lutheran Church] Wednesday Words & Bethany Newsletter for February 26, 2014

Wednesday Words for February 25, 2014

Thought for the Day:

“Jesus showed us all that the very things we often flee – our vulnerability and mortality – can, at any moment, become the place of holy transfiguration, for us and for our world.”

- Henri Nouwen: Writings Selected With An Introduction By Robert A. Jonas

***

Sunday at Bethany: What a powerful Sunday of worship this will be! We will be welcoming new members at both services, and will be witnessing the baptisms of Laurel Navta and James Bernhard, who happen to be first cousins, at the 10:30 service! This is the Sunday of the Transfiguration—an important day on the church calendar, even if it happens to be a part of the Jesus story we rarely focus on. The story of the Transfiguration launches us into a new season, Lent, which begins next week with Ash Wednesday.

We will hear how Jesus went up the mountain with a few of the disciples, and how “he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white”. Our music will reflect the story:  “Shine, Jesus, Shine”, “O Morning Star”, “Beautiful Savior”, and then “Blessed Assurance” (this one just because it’s on old favorite!) We’ll end the service with “Alleluia, Song of Gladness”, as this Sunday is the last time we sing “alleluia” until Easter Sunday.

Ash Wednesday: Begin your Lenten walk with Jesus by attending worship at 11 am or 7 pm on Wednesday, March 5. We will be distributing ashes and will have confession at both services.

Wednesdays in Lent: Every Wednesday during Lent we will worship at 7 pm using Holden Evening Prayer, which has become a favorite musical setting at Bethany over the years. The Bethany Choir will sing a special selection each evening, accompanied by a dramatic reading. The music and readings come from a cantata called “Whispers of the Passion” by Joseph Martin.

Diaper Drive: Barb Buczek reports that the Sunday School students collected a real mountain of diapers: 1,158 diapers will be donated to the Diaper Bank of McHenry! Great job, everyone!

New overnight parking procedures have been put together by the Property Team. This is to ensure we don’t have unknown vehicles left in the lot which will disrupt snow removal and special events. If you need to park your vehicle overnight in the Bethany lot, you will fill out a form to receive a parking placard in the office. NOTE: The Property Team has made accommodations for Sunday night PADS.

Worship & Education Surveys: Thank you to the 100+ people who completed these surveys. The Transition Team will be analyzing the results and including them in their deliberations. A new worship time proposal will be given to the Council this month. Please pray for the leadership of the church as they discern the best way forward.

This Week’s Readings: Last Sunday of Epiphany/Transfiguration

Prayer of the Day:

O God, in the transfiguration of your Son

you confirmed the mysteries of the faith

by the witness of Moses and Elijah,

and in the voice from the bright cloud declaring Jesus your beloved Son,

you foreshadowed our adoption as your children.

Make us heirs with Christ of your glory,

and bring us to enjoy its fullness,

through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and forever. Amen.

FIRST READING           Exodus 24:12–18

At Mount Sinai, Moses experienced the presence of God for forty days and forty nights. The "glory of the Lord" settled on the mountain, and on the seventh day God called out to Moses. On the mountain God gave Moses the stone tablets inscribed with the ten commandments.

12The LORD said to Moses, "Come up to me on the mountain, and wait there; and I will give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction." 13So Moses set out with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up into the mountain of God. 14To the elders he had said, "Wait here for us, until we come to you again; for Aaron and Hur are with you; whoever has a dispute may go to them."

15Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. 16The glory of the LORD settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days; on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the cloud. 17Now the appearance of the glory of the LORD was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel. 18Moses entered the cloud, and went up on the mountain. Moses was on the mountain for forty days and forty nights.

PSALM (ELW) Psalm 2

1Why are the nations | in an uproar?

     Why do the peoples mutter | empty threats?

2Why do the kings of the earth rise up in revolt,

and the princes | plot together,

     against the LORD and against the | LORD's anointed?

3"Let us break their | yoke," they say;

     "let us cast off their | bonds from us."

4God whose throne is in heav- | en is laughing;

     the LORD holds them | in derision.   R

5Then in wrath God | speaks to them,

     and in rage fills | them with terror.

6"As for me, I have anoint- | ed my king

     upon Zion, my | holy mountain."

7Let me announce the decree | of the LORD,

     who said to me, "You are my son; this day have I be- | gotten you.

8Ask of me, and I will give you the nations for | your inheritance

     and the ends of the earth for | your possession.   R

9You shall crush them with an | iron rod

     and shatter them like a | piece of pottery."

10And now, you | kings, be wise;

     be warned, you rulers | of the earth.

11Submit to the | LORD with fear,

     and with trembling | bow in worship;

12lest the LORD be angry, and you perish in a sudden | blaze of wrath.

     Happy are all who take ref- | uge in God!   R

SECOND READING     2 Peter 1:16–21

At the transfiguration, God's voice was heard, declaring Jesus to be the beloved Son. By the activity of the Holy Spirit, God's voice continues to be heard through the word of scripture.

16For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17For he received honor and glory from God the Father when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory, saying, "This is my Son, my Beloved, with whom I am well pleased." 18We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven, while we were with him on the holy mountain.

19So we have the prophetic message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 20First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, 21because no prophecy ever came by human will, but men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

GOSPEL           Matthew 17:1–9

Shortly before he enters Jerusalem, where he will be crucified, Jesus is revealed to his disciples in a mountaintop experience of divine glory called the transfiguration.

Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. 2And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. 3Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. 4Then Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." 5While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, "This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!" 6When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. 7But Jesus came and touched them, saying, "Get up and do not be afraid." 8And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone.

9As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, "Tell no one about the vision until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."

Peace,

Pastor Carrie Smith

[Bethany Lutheran Church] New Bethany Overnight Parking Procedure

New Parking Procedure

A new procedure for overnight parking in the Bethany lots has been put in place. Currently cars are interfering with snow removal in the lots. Bethany needs a record of owner/contact information/vehicle/plate number. A request form can be obtained in the church office or in the Documents section on MemberConnect and submitted to the office or church e-mail (churchoffice@bethanylc.com). The Property Team will review the request. Any vehicles parked overnight without permission will be relocated at owner's expense. Thank you for your cooperation.

[Bethany Lutheran Church] Wednesday Words & Bethany Newsletter for February 19,2014

Wednesday Words for February 19, 2014

From Pastor Carrie Smith

Thought for the Day:
“Let us plant dates even though those who plant them will never eat them. We must live by the love of what we will never see. . . . Such disciplined love is what has given prophets, revolutionaries, and saints the courage to die for the future they envisaged. They make their own bodies the seed of their highest hope.”

Sunday at Bethany: This Sunday is the 7th Sunday after Epiphany, and we’ll be hearing more of the Sermon on the Mount from Matthew chapter 5. We’ll be singing two older hymns (“Christ is Made the Sure Foundation” and “Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me”) as well as some newer ones (“You are Holy”, “Goodness is Stronger than Evil”) and the Bell Canto Choir will be playing “Shine, Jesus Shine”, which is a newer song that’s become an old favorite! As a result of a few guest preachers, I haven’t preached in a month, so I’m eager to get back in the pulpit (hopefully you won’t be disappointed!) J

Sunday Education Forum: Between services, grab a cup of coffee and then come back into the sanctuary for a forum on the ELCA theology of mission, known as accompaniment. Rev. Rafael Malpica-Padilla (a member of Bethany and also Executive Director of ELCA Global Mission) will be presenting this session. All are welcome!

New Member Luncheon after worship: After the 10:30 service, we’ve invited those who are interested in membership to join us for a new member luncheon and introductory class. It would be great to have some “older” members in attendance, too! If you would like to attend this luncheon to welcome new members to Bethany, please RSVP right away to me at carrie.smith@bethanylc.com  so we have enough food.

Sunday afternoon: Sunday at 4 pm, come back to church for a fabulous organ recital by Dr. Anthony Williams of Fisk University. As usual, Bethany Arts Series concerts have free admission. The freewill offering goes to pay for future concerts.

Good news! Felix Malpica, who grew up here at Bethany, has been officially called as associate pastor of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas. Thanks be to God! Even better news: His ordination is scheduled to take place here at Bethany on Saturday, April 5. Watch for more information to come!

40 years ago today, students and faculty at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis walked off campus and formed what became known as Seminex (Seminary in Exile). Many of my own seminary professors were part of this walkout (as students). You can see pictures of this event here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/elcaarchives/2489435623/  and can read more about what lead up to the Seminex walkout here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seminex

Bethany Adventure Seekers this Saturday! You are invited to a Game Night & Wine Tasting Event on Saturday, February 22, 2014 from 7 pm to 9 pm. Bring a snack and your favorite game.  If you are interested in participating in the wine tasting, please bring a bottle.  Babysitting is provided.

Contact April at a.frog@cai-chicago.com or Joyce at jmeier1@gmail.com with any questions.

This Week’s Texts: 7th Sunday after Epiphany

Prayer of the Day:

Holy God of compassion,

you invite us into your way of forgiveness and peace.

Lead us to love our enemies,

and transform our words and deeds

to be like his through whom we pray,

Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

FIRST READING           Leviticus 19:1–2, 9–18

The LORD spoke to Moses, saying:

2Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them: You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy. 9When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very edges of your field, or gather the gleanings of your harvest. 10You shall not strip your vineyard bare, or gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the alien: I am the LORD your God.

11You shall not steal; you shall not deal falsely; and you shall not lie to one another. 12And you shall not swear falsely by my name, profaning the name of your God: I am the LORD.

13You shall not defraud your neighbor; you shall not steal; and you shall not keep for yourself the wages of a laborer until morning. 14You shall not revile the deaf or put a stumbling block before the blind; you shall fear your God: I am the LORD.

15You shall not render an unjust judgment; you shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great: with justice you shall judge your neighbor. 16You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not profit by the blood of your neighbor: I am the LORD.

17You shall not hate in your heart anyone of your kin; you shall reprove your neighbor, or you will incur guilt yourself. 18You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against any of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.

PSALM (ELW) Psalm 119:33–40

33Teach me, O LORD, the way | of your statutes,

     and I shall keep it | to the end.

34Give me understanding, and I shall | keep your teaching;

     I shall keep it with | all my heart.

35Lead me in the path of | your commandments,

     for that is | my desire.

36Incline my heart to | your decrees

     and not to | unjust gain.   R

37Turn my eyes from be- | holding falsehood;

     give me life | in your way.

38Fulfill your promise | to your servant,

     which is for | those who fear you.

39Turn away the reproach | that I dread,

     because your judg- | ments are good.

40Behold, I long for | your commandments;

     by your righteousness en- | liven me.   R

SECOND READING     1 Corinthians 3:10–11, 16–23

10According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building on it. Each builder must choose with care how to build on it. 11For no one can lay any foundation other than the one that has been laid; that foundation is Jesus Christ. 16Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? 17If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy that person. For God's temple is holy, and you are that temple.

18Do not deceive yourselves. If you think that you are wise in this age, you should become fools so that you may become wise. 19For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written,

"He catches the wise in their craftiness,"

20and again,

"The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise,

that they are futile."

21So let no one boast about human leaders. For all things are yours, 22whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future — all belong to you, 23and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.

GOSPEL           Matthew 5:38–48

38"You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' 39But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; 40and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well; 41and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile. 42Give to everyone who begs from you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you.

43"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' 44But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. 46For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Peace,

This Week’s Texts: The 6th Sunday after Epiphany

Prayer of the Day:

O God, the strength of all who hope in you,

because we are weak mortals we accomplish nothing good without you.

Help us to see and understand the things we ought to do,

and give us grace and power to do them,

through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

FIRST READING           Deuteronomy 30:15–20

15See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and adversity. 16If you obey the commandments of the LORD your God that I am commanding you today, by loving the LORD your God, walking in his ways, and observing his commandments, decrees, and ordinances, then you shall live and become numerous, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to possess. 17But if your heart turns away and you do not hear, but are led astray to bow down to other gods and serve them, 18I declare to you today that you shall perish; you shall not live long in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess. 19I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live, 20loving the LORD your God, obeying him, and holding fast to him; for that means life to you and length of days, so that you may live in the land that the LORD swore to give to your ancestors, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

PSALM (ELW) Psalm 119:1–8

1Happy are they whose | way is blameless,

     who follow the teaching | of the LORD!

2Happy are they who observe | your decrees

     and seek you with | all their hearts,

3who never do | any wrong,

     but always walk | in your ways.

4You laid down | your commandments,

     that we should | fully keep them.   R

5Oh, that my ways were made | so direct

     that I might | keep your statutes!

6Then I should not be | put to shame,

     when I regard all | your commandments.

7I will thank you with | a true heart,

     when I have learned your | righteous judgments.

8I will | keep your statutes;

     do not utter- | ly forsake me.   R

SECOND READING     1 Corinthians 3:1–9

And so, brothers and sisters, I could not speak to you as spiritual people, but rather as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. 2I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for solid food. Even now you are still not ready, 3for you are still of the flesh. For as long as there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not of the flesh, and behaving according to human inclinations? 4For when one says, "I belong to Paul," and another, "I belong to Apollos," are you not merely human?

5What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you came to believe, as the Lord assigned to each. 6I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. 8The one who plants and the one who waters have a common purpose, and each will receive wages according to the labor of each. 9For we are God's servants, working together; you are God's field, God's building.

GOSPEL           Matthew 5:21–37

21"You have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, 'You shall not murder'; and 'whoever murders shall be liable to judgment.' 22But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be liable to judgment; and if you insult a brother or sister, you will be liable to the council; and if you say, 'You fool,' you will be liable to the hell of fire. 23So when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift. 25Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are on the way to court with him, or your accuser may hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison. 26Truly I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.

27"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.' 28But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to go into hell.

31"It was also said, 'Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.' 32But I say to you that anyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

33"Again, you have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, 'You shall not swear falsely, but carry out the vows you have made to the Lord.' 34But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37Let your word be 'Yes, Yes' or 'No, No'; anything more than this comes from the evil one.

Peace,

Pr. Carrie Smith

Bethany Lutheran Church to Host a Concert to Benefit PADS

Featuring award-winning North Carolina folk group Molasses Creek

February 7, 2014: Bethany Lutheran Church will host a concert to benefit PADS on Sunday, February 16 at 4 p.m. Calling the event “Have a Heart for the Homeless”, the church has designated proceeds from the concert’s freewill offering to directly benefit the Sunday night PADS site. PADS (Providing Advocacy, Dignity, and Shelter) has been a regular ministry at Bethany for more than 25 years. Bethany Lutheran Church, a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), is located at 76 W. Crystal Lake Avenue in Crystal Lake.

The featured performers are Molasses Creek, a contemporary folk group from Ocracoke Island, located off the coast of North Carolina.

Molasses Creek's high-energy performances and phenomenal songwriting bring the love of their coastal home to the stage. The band's elegant harmonies and arrangements, blazing instrumentals, and quirky sense of humor have won loyal followers throughout the United States and around the world.

Award winners from Garrison Keillor's “Prairie Home Companion,” Molasses Creek has recorded 13 albums over the past 20 years.   In 2012, Molasses Creek's release, "An Island Out of Time" reached the #4 spot on the National Folk Radio DJ Charts. “Sing Out” Magazine wrote, “The band's combination of harmony, humor, and love for the island they call home gives their work a distinct sound and vision.”  www.molassescreek.com

Thought for the Day: In honor of Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s birthday

“Christian love draws no distinction between one enemy and another, except that the more bitter our enemy's hatred, the greater his need of love. Be his enmity political or religious, he has nothing to expect from a follower of Jesus but unqualified love. In such love there is no inner discord between the private person and official capacity. In both we are disciples of Christ, or we are not Christians at all.”

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, born Feb. 4, 1906

Hanged at a Nazi concentration camp on April 9, 1945

From “The Cost of Discipleship”

Sunday at Bethany: What a busy Sunday!

†We’ll be joined by the Boy Scouts at 10:30 a.m., who will serve by greeting, ushering, and reading the lessons.

†The Blood Drive will be happening in the basement (yes, walk-ins are accepted!)

†Your new Bethany Council members will be installed at both services.

†And, of course, we will hear the Good News preached and will share in the gift of Jesus’ healing and forgiveness in the bread and wine!

This week’s Gospel lesson continues the Beatitudes with the familiar words “You are the light of the world!” Therefore, we’ll be singing lots of songs about light: “Lord of Light”, “This Little Light of Mine”, and “I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light.” Bethany Choir sings at 8:30 a.m. and the Sonshine Singers will provide music at 10:30 a.m.

Next Sunday at Bethany: At the 10:30 service next week, we’ll be joined by Molasses Creek, a contemporary folk ensemble from Ocracoke Island, off the coast of North Carolina. Come back at 4 pm for a full performance from this award-winning band—admission is free, but a freewill offering will be benefiting our own Bethany PADS site!

Seeking a few actors/readers! I am in need of 3 more people, of any age, who would like to read (memorization optional) a short monologue for one of our midweek Lenten services. If you are interested, please email me at carrie.smith@bethanylc.com

This Week’s Texts: The 5th Sunday after Epiphany

Prayer of the Day

Lord God, with endless mercy you receive the prayers of all who call upon you. By your Spirit show us the things we ought to do, and give us the grace and power to do them, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

FIRST READING Isaiah 58:1–9a [9b–12]

Shortly after the return of Israel from exile in Babylon, the people were troubled by the ineffectiveness of their fasts. God reminds them that outward observance is no substitute for genuine fasting that results in acts of justice, such as feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, and clothing the naked.

Shout out, do not hold back!

Lift up your voice like a trumpet!

Announce to my people their rebellion,

to the house of Jacob their sins.

2Yet day after day they seek me

and delight to know my ways,

as if they were a nation that practiced righteousness

and did not forsake the ordinance of their God;

they ask of me righteous judgments,

they delight to draw near to God.

3"Why do we fast, but you do not see?

Why humble ourselves, but you do not notice?"

Look, you serve your own interest on your fast day,

and oppress all your workers.

4Look, you fast only to quarrel and to fight

and to strike with a wicked fist.

Such fasting as you do today

will not make your voice heard on high.

5Is such the fast that I choose,

a day to humble oneself?

Is it to bow down the head like a bulrush,

and to lie in sackcloth and ashes?

Will you call this a fast,

a day acceptable to the LORD?

6Is not this the fast that I choose:

to loose the bonds of injustice,

to undo the thongs of the yoke,

to let the oppressed go free,

and to break every yoke?

7Is it not to share your bread with the hungry,

and bring the homeless poor into your house;

when you see the naked, to cover them,

and not to hide yourself from your own kin?

8Then your light shall break forth like the dawn,

and your healing shall spring up quickly;

your vindicator shall go before you,

the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard.

9Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer;

you shall cry for help, and he will say, Here I am. 9b

If you remove the yoke from among you,

the pointing of the finger, the speaking of evil,

10if you offer your food to the hungry

and satisfy the needs of the afflicted,

then your light shall rise in the darkness

and your gloom be like the noonday.

11The LORD will guide you continually,

and satisfy your needs in parched places,

and make your bones strong;

and you shall be like a watered garden,

like a spring of water,

whose waters never fail.

12Your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt;

you shall raise up the foundations of many generations;

you shall be called the repairer of the breach,

the restorer of streets to live in.

PSALM (ELW)      Psalm 112:1–9 [10]

1Hallelujah! Happy are they who | fear the LORD

     and have great delight in | God's commandments!

2Their descendants will be mighty | in the land;

     the generation of the upright | will be blessed.

3Wealth and riches will be | in their house,

     and their righteousness will | last forever.

4Light shines in the darkness | for the upright;

     the righteous are merciful and full | of compassion.   R

5It is good for them to be gener- | ous in lending

     and to manage their af- | fairs with justice.

6For they will nev- | er be shaken;

     the righteous will be kept in everlast- | ing remembrance.

7They will not be afraid of any | evil rumors;

     their heart is steadfast, trusting | in the LORD.

8Their heart is established and | will not shrink,

     until they see their desire up- | on their enemies.

9They have given freely to the poor,

and their righteousness stands | fast forever;

      they will hold up their | head with honor. [  R] here only if the psalm ends at v. 9

[10The wicked will see it and be angry;

they will gnash their teeth and | pine away;

     the desires of the wick- | ed will perish.   R]

SECOND READING        1 Corinthians 2:1–12 [13–16]

Though people such as the Corinthians are enamored with human philosophy and wisdom, Paul continuously presents God’s hidden wisdom which is Jesus Christ crucified. True spiritual maturity involves judging ourselves and others in light of God’s revelation in the cross.

When I came to you, brothers and sisters, I did not come proclaiming the mystery of God to you in lofty words or wisdom. 2For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified. 3And I came to you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling. 4My speech and my proclamation were not with plausible words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God.

6Yet among the mature we do speak wisdom, though it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to perish. 7But we speak God's wisdom, secret and hidden, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. 8None of the rulers of this age understood this; for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9But, as it is written,

"What no eye has seen, nor ear heard,

nor the human heart conceived,

what God has prepared for those who love him" —

10these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. 11For what human being knows what is truly human except the human spirit that is within? So also no one comprehends what is truly God's except the Spirit of God. 12Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may understand the gifts bestowed on us by God. 13And we speak of these things in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual things to those who are spiritual.

14Those who are unspiritual do not receive the gifts of God's Spirit, for they are foolishness to them, and they are unable to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. 15Those who are spiritual discern all things, and they are themselves subject to no one else's scrutiny.

16"For who has known the mind of the Lord

so as to instruct him?"

But we have the mind of Christ.

GOSPEL       Matthew 5:13–20

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus encourages his followers to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world, doing good works and keeping God’s commandments.

13"You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot.

14"You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. 15No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

17"Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. 18For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, not one stroke of a letter will pass from the law until all is accomplished. 19Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

[Bethany Lutheran Church] Greetings from our sponsored missionaries

Below is the text of a greeting from our sponsored missionaries in Tanzania, the Stubbs Family. They are serving as music teachers.

Please hold them in prayer! You can also sign up to sponsor them for a week on the church bulletin board ($25) and you can learn more about them at their family website: Stubbs Family Website

Pr. Carrie

"Greetings to you Pr. Carrie,

 Sorry for the delay in responding. We are happy to hear about your Global Mission Sunday tomorrow. Here are a few updates from the Stubbs family serving in Tanzania:

 We give thanks for the continued progress with music activities at Tumaini University Makumira on many fronts. During the past year we organized several 1 day music workshops for church music directors in various parts of Tanzania. We also expanded into offering 2 one-week church music seminars at Makumira in August, which were very well received. Our department has agreed to continue these in the future, both on and off campus.

 In November we graduated 12 music students. Now there are a total of 33 persons in the entire country of Tanzania with a music degree! Many of our graduates are teaching in various certificate and diploma programs or other music-related posts through NGOs, the government, and opening their own businesses.

 We will begin a major grant project with funding from the European Development Fund next month. The grant (written by Randy) is for just over 1 million Euros, plus Makumira’s contributions (some on hand and some still to be raised by us) of 700,000 Euros. There will be archive projects for traditional music, creating a performing arts village with performance, workshops, classroom and other spaces on 4 acres at Makumira, non-degree dance training, tapping into the vast tourism market for future financial sustainability and more. This is a HUGE step for the music program and the university.

 Carol has had great success at a nearby government school that ranks near the bottom of all results. She and our students decided to offer music last year and the response was amazing. The first day 115 students showed up. Eventually 49 took the national music exam for Form 2 students and 46 passed. Not only is that kind of pass rate completely unheard of here, but for nearly all of the students music was their highest score. This is very important and significant in showing what could be possible in other schools.

 Carol, Randy, and Megan had an opportunity to perform with the Nairobi Symphony in November and just 2 weeks later Carol and Megan were featured soloists for a concert in Dar es Salaam. They got to fly instead of taking the 11 hour bus ride each way. God continues to provide many opportunities for our family to shine musically, individually and together.

 Megan (20) is enjoying her 2nd year as a music major here at Makumira. She loves all the activity and work and is an excellent student. She posts frequently on Facebook if you want to keep up with her.

Marissa (18) continues to love her schooling with a Tanzanian teacher and she enthusiastically participates in all dance and choir rehearsals with the department. She is our schedule and chore keeper, doing her part to try and keep us all in the right place at the right time.

 Nathan (17) is doing his Junior Year of HS as a home schooler. He is taking some online courses, some courses at Makumira and others as self-study. He lives and sleeps computers, but he is also doing a good job dancing with the department and singing with the department choir.

 Juliana (17) has been living with us 3.5 years now. She is now in Form 4 and studying hard so that she can pass the National exams and go on to Forms 5 and 6, which will allow her to go to university later. She dances and sings with us when she is not in school and is learning flute, and doing quite well.

 Adelina (32) has been living with us about 1 year now. She is one of our recent graduates that went through some difficult times. Next week she will interview for one of the few secondary school (private) music teaching jobs in our area. She has helped a lot around the house and we hope that she is nearly ready to take the next step in her life.

 Katie (18) is a friend of Megan’s from DeKalb, IL. She is taking a gap year between HS and college and spending it in Tanzania. She is soaking up the culture and language and customs quite well. Her mom will arrive next Friday and then I guess we will find out what she thinks about her daughter’s experiences the past 4 months.

 Irene (14) is our housekeeper’s youngest daughter. She moved in with us 3 weeks ago because her family cannot afford for her to be in boarding school. Now they can pay the tuition at the same school where Juliana attends. So far she is doing well and enjoying the slightly busy Stubbs’ household.

 Of course everyday we have other students from the village next door coming for music lessons and practicing (instruments have to stay here). We send the last students home at 9:00 PM each night. When you add in our cat, dog, and 4 goats (milking) plus a few more workers to help us out it’s pretty busy. Oh yes, then there is our official job of teaching at the university!

 One of the important things that God is showing us/teaching us is that EVERYTHING in our life is our work. We do not work 9-5 M-F. We are ambassadors for Christ 24/7/365 at work, at home, at play, everywhere. We have never worked so hard and we have never felt so blessed by God as we do now. Bwana asifiwe!

 Of course there are some days that are very difficult for us, not our teaching at the university, but being fully integrated into the Tanzanian community. Those are stories that we do not share in our blog, but they are sometimes the most meaningful and profound, for us and those that we are struggling with together.

 Our big concert is next Sunday (9th). Immediately after that I (Randy) will board the KLM flight for the States to see my Dad before he passes away. He is in the late stages of cancer and for me and him and my family I am making this trip. I ask your prayers for safe travel and for peace for my dad. 9 months ago Carol’s father passed away from a heart attack. Sometimes life gives us some challenges just to help us keep our perspective. Perhaps the most difficult part of serving overseas is being so far away when your family needs you.

 This is not anything close to a summary of what is happening, but it is a little taste. We thank you for your continued prayers and support and opportunity to share together as God’s Hands fulfilling God’s Plans.

In His Service,

Randy, Carol and the rest of the clan
