[Bethany Lutheran Church] Help us plan for Christmas - Christmas Eve Worship helpers NEEDED!

Yes, we have quickly moved to December.

This Sunday, November 30, is the 1st Sunday of Advent.  The 1st candle on the Advent wreath will be lit and we begin to prepare and wait for the birth of the Christ child.

Here in the office, we are busy preparing for our Christmas Eve Worship services and are in need of some worship helpers for each of our services as follows:

5 p.m. Worship helper needs include:

  • 4 ushers:  the ushers greet people, pass out worship information and the candles for the candlelight hymn, collect the offering and direct people to communion.
  • 4 acolytes:  the acolyte role is not only to light the candles, but to help with the communion distribution.  They hold the cup of wine and the cup of grape juice for dipping and share the words "The blood of Christ shed for you".
  • 4 communion servers:  the communion server holds the communion cup, wipes it off after someone sips and says "The blood of Christ shed for you."

7 p.m. Worship helper needs include:

  • 4 acolytes:  the acolyte role is not only to light the candles, but to help with the communion distribution.  They hold the cup of wine and the cup of grape juice for dipping and share the words "The blood of Christ shed for you".
  • 1 more communion server:  the communion server holds the communion cup, wipes it off after someone sips and says "The blood of Christ shed for you."

Please check your Christmas Eve worship plans.  Then let me know as soon as possible (December 10 at the latest so this information can be included in the bulletins.) if you can help with any of these opportunities as we prepare celebrating the Savior's birth.

THANKS!

 Thought for the Day:

Empowered by God — Responding by Grace

“Now as you excel in everything — in faith,

in speech, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness,

and in our love for you — so we want you to

excel also in this generous undertaking” (2 Cor. 8:7).

Sunday at Bethany:

In our first article as part of this year’s stewardship emphasis, we saw how God is our Source, how all that we have comes from God, how God empowers and enables us, and how we respond by grace through faith. We also saw that like the Macedonian Christians, we are to first give ourselves to the Lord as good stewards of the grace of God.

 Sometimes, when stewardship is mentioned, people wrongly conclude that giving money is all that is involved. Not so. Giving does include our financial resources, but it goes far beyond money and actually encompasses three primary resources. These are what might be called “building blocks” in God’s “school of faith” which constitutes “lifestyle stewardship” or “total discipleship.”

The final building block in our lifestyle of stewardship is the matter of our treasure. Don’t be confused. Money cannot buy salvation. Money cannot buy eternal life. Money can’t even buy security which God alone provides. As with our time and talents, how we use money is an indication of our priorities. Think about the process: God owns everything. According to Psalm 24:1, “The earth is the Lord’s.” God has never relinquished the title deed to the world, but God enables us to enjoy that which rightfully belongs to God. God then seeks to have us return a portion of what has been entrusted to us through our giving.

 Giving is not to help God or the church pay bills. Giving is not because God needs anything from us. Giving is God’s way of growing us as disciples. Every time we give for God’s glory from our hearts, which have been redeemed by God’s love and grace, we give away a little of our selfishness. Every time we give of our resources, we grow in grace and in our walk with Christ.

 Writing in “Our Daily Bread,” Anne Cetas described her pastor’s way of illustrating the truths of 2 Corinthians 8 and 9. He placed an offering plate on the floor and stepped into it. He then stood there as he talked about the importance of giving our whole selves to the Lord. Anne then suggested, “The next time the offering plate comes around at church, imagine your-self stepping into it. It will help you to excel in the grace of giving.”

 As you consider your life during this time of stewardship emphasis, will you — like the Macedonian Christians — excel in the “grace of giving” by first giving yourself to the Lord? Will you then respond by grace through giving your time, your talents and your treasure to be used by God in this ministry?

 As you consider your response to these questions seek the Lord’s direction and excel in this generous undertaking.

 Pr. Len

First Sunday in Advent

FIRST READING                                                                            ISAIAH 64:l-9

This lament comes from a people who have had their hopes shattered. The visions of a rebuilt Jerusalem and a renewed people of God, spoken of in Isaiah 40—55, have not been realized. Instead, the people experience ruin, conflict, and famine. This lament calls God to account—to be the God who has brought deliverance in the past.

O that you would tear open the heavens and come down,
so that the mountains would quake at your presence —
2as when fire kindles brushwood
and the fire causes water to boil —
to make your name known to your adversaries,
so that the nations might tremble at your presence!
3When you did awesome deeds that we did not expect,
you came down, the mountains quaked at your presence.
4From ages past no one has heard,
no ear has perceived,
no eye has seen any God besides you,
who works for those who wait for him.
5You meet those who gladly do right,
those who remember you in your ways.
But you were angry, and we sinned;
because you hid yourself we transgressed.
6We have all become like one who is unclean,
and all our righteous deeds are like a filthy cloth.
We all fade like a leaf,
and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
7There is no one who calls on your name,
or attempts to take hold of you;
for you have hidden your face from us,
and have delivered us into the hand of our iniquity.
8Yet, O LORD, you are our Father;
we are the clay, and you are our potter;
we are all the work of your hand.
9Do not be exceedingly angry, O LORD,
and do not remember iniquity forever.
Now consider, we are all your people.

SECOND READING                                                   l CORINTHIANS  l:3-9

As the Christians in Corinth await the advent of Jesus, Paul reminds them how the Lord has already enriched them through spiritual gifts and will continue to strengthen them until the coming day of the Lord.

3Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
4I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, 5for in every way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind — 6just as the testimony of Christ has been strengthened among you — 7so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. 8He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9God is faithful; by him you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

GOSPEL                                                                                MARK 13:24-37

In today's reading, Jesus encourages his followers to look forward to the day when he returns in power and glory to end all suffering.

24But in those days, after that suffering,
the sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not give its light,
25and the stars will be falling from heaven,
and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.
26Then they will see 'the Son of Man coming in clouds' with great power and glory. 27Then he will send out the angels, and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.
28From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. 29So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates. 30Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. 31Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
32But about that day or hour no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33Beware, keep alert; for you do not know when the time will come. 34It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his slaves in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to be on the watch. 35Therefore, keep awake — for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or at dawn, 36or else he may find you asleep when he comes suddenly. 37And what I say to you I say to all: Keep awake."

“Now as you excel in everything — in faith,

Giving does include our financial resources, but it goes far beyond money and actually encompasses three primary resources. These are what might be called “building blocks” in God’s “school of faith” which constitutes “lifestyle stewardship” or “total discipleship.”

 This week we will focus on the second “building block” in our lifestyle of stewardship. This is the matter of our abilities, our talents. This is an area in which all of us have not been gifted equally. Some have been gifted by God to work with their hands, with machines, or with computers. Others excel in their ability to communicate orally or via the printed page. The effective outreach of the Gospel here at Bethany Lutheran Church is made possible only when God’s people who are part of this fellowship use their combined talents for God’s glory and for the good of this ministry.

 During this time of our stewardship emphasis, you are invited to look at your abilities and talents and see how you might give them back to God for the sake of God’s mission in the world. Your gifts might be able to be shared in the area of worship, learning, witness, support or outreach. All of these areas are important to our mission of reflecting Christ in our message and actions.

Christ the King Sunday

Prayer of the Day: O God of power and might, your Son shows us the way of service, and in him we inherit the riches of your grace. Give us the wisdom to know what is right and the strength to serve the world you have made, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen

 First Reading                                                                          Ezekiel 34:11-16, 20-24

Since Israel's kings proved to be bad shepherds, Ezekiel declares that the Lord will assume the role of shepherd in Israel. The Lord will also set over them a shepherd-messiah, "my servant David," who will feed and care for the people.

11For thus says the Lord GOD: I myself will search for my sheep, and will seek them out. 12As shepherds seek out their flocks when they are among their scattered sheep, so I will seek out my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places to which they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness. 13I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land; and I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the watercourses, and in all the inhabited parts of the land. 14I will feed them with good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel shall be their pasture; there they shall lie down in good grazing land, and they shall feed on rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. 15I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I will make them lie down, says the Lord GOD. 16I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, but the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them with justice.
20Therefore, thus says the Lord GOD to them: I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep. 21Because you pushed with flank and shoulder, and butted at all the weak animals with your horns until you scattered them far and wide, 22I will save my flock, and they shall no longer be ravaged; and I will judge between sheep and sheep.
23I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he shall feed them: he shall feed them and be their shepherd. 24And I, the LORD, will be their God, and my servant David shall be prince among them; I, the LORD, have spoken.

 Psalm 95:1-7a

We are the people of God's pasture and the sheep of God's hand. (Ps. 95:7)

1Come, let us sing | to the LORD;

     let us shout for joy to the rock of | our salvation.

2Let us come before God's presence | with thanksgiving

     and raise a loud shout to the | LORD with psalms.

3For you, LORD, | are a great God,

     and a great ruler a- | bove all gods.

4In your hand are the caverns | of the earth;

     the heights of the hills are | also yours.   R

5The sea is yours, | for you made it,

     and your hands have molded | the dry land.

6Come, let us worship | and bow down,

     let us kneel before the | LORD our maker.

7For the LORD | is our God,

     and we are the people of God's pasture

     and the sheep | of God's hand.   R

 Second Reading                                                                         Ephesians 1:15-23

In this passage, God is praised for revealing ultimate divine power in raising Jesus from the dead. The resurrected, exalted Christ is Lord both of the church and the entire universe, now and in the age to come.

15I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason 16I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. 17I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, 18so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, 19and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. 20God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. 22And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, 23which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

 Gospel                                                                                  Matthew 25:31-46

Jesus compares himself to a king who moves among his subjects to see how he is treated: what is done for the least of those who belong to his family is truly done for him.

31When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. 32All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, 33and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left. 34Then the king will say to those at his right hand, 'Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 35for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.' 37Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? 38And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? 39And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?' 40And the king will answer them, 'Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.' 41Then he will say to those at his left hand, 'You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; 42for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' 44Then they also will answer, 'Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?' 45Then he will answer them, 'Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.' 46And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

 Thought for the Day:

Empowered by God — Responding by Grace

“Now as you excel in everything — in faith,

in speech, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness,

and in our love for you — so we want you to

excel also in this generous undertaking” (2 Cor. 8:7).

Sunday at Bethany: In last week’s article as part of this year’s stewardship emphasis, we saw how God is our Source, how all that we have comes from God, how God empowers and enables us, and how we respond by grace through faith.

 This week we focus on the matter of our time. Time is one resource that is given to everyone equally. All of us have twenty-four hours in every day. No more, no less. How we use our time reflects accurately what receives priority in our lives. Some people have made the TV a priority in their lives. They might not admit it, but by totaling the amount of time they spend in front of the set, it would be hard to draw any other conclusion. Others have made sports a priority. How can we tell that’s true? Again, by the amount of time they spend pursuing sports. The key question is this: How much of the 168 hours available to each of us every week is spent in pursuit of God or in service to God’s kingdom, especially here in this ministry?

 Is it possible that each of us could give a football game amount of time or a movie amount of time each week? How about at least one hour for worship, one hour for learning and prayer, and one hour for service? Giving God the first fruits of our time honors the one who blesses all of our days and time.

Prayer of the Day: Righteous God, our merciful master, you own the earth and all its peoples, and you give us all that we have. Inspire us to serve you with justice and wisdom, and prepare us for the joy of the day of your coming, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen

 First Reading                                                                                                 Zephaniah 1:7,12-18

Zephaniah presents the day of the Lord as one of judgment and wrath. Descriptions of the last day in the New Testament include details taken from Old Testament accounts of the day of the Lord.

7Be silent before the Lord GOD!
For the day of the LORD is at hand;
the LORD has prepared a sacrifice,
he has consecrated his guests.
12At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps,
and I will punish the people
who rest complacently on their dregs,
those who say in their hearts,
"The LORD will not do good,
nor will he do harm."
13Their wealth shall be plundered,
and their houses laid waste.
Though they build houses,
they shall not inhabit them;
though they plant vineyards,
they shall not drink wine from them.
14The great day of the LORD is near,
near and hastening fast;
the sound of the day of the LORD is bitter,
the warrior cries aloud there.
15That day will be a day of wrath,
a day of distress and anguish,
a day of ruin and devastation,
a day of darkness and gloom,
a day of clouds and thick darkness,
16a day of trumpet blast and battle cry
against the fortified cities
and against the lofty battlements.
17I will bring such distress upon people
that they shall walk like the blind;
because they have sinned against the LORD,
their blood shall be poured out like dust,
and their flesh like dung.
18Neither their silver nor their gold
will be able to save them
on the day of the LORD's wrath;
in the fire of his passion
the whole earth shall be consumed;
for a full, a terrible end
he will make of all the inhabitants of the earth.

 Psalm 90:1-8

1Lord, you have | been our refuge

     from one generation | to another.

2Before the mountains were brought forth,

or the land and the | earth were born,

     from age to age | you are God.

3You turn us back to the | dust and say,

     "Turn back, O child- | ren of earth."

4For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when | it is past

     and like a watch | in the night;   R

5you sweep them away | like a dream,

     they fade away suddenly | like the grass:

6in the morning it is | green and flourishes;

     in the evening it is dried | up and withered.

7For we are consumed | by your anger;

     we are afraid because | of your wrath.

8Our iniquities you have | set before you,

     and our secret sins in the light | of your countenance.   R

[9When you are angry, all our | days are gone;

     we bring our years to an end | like a sigh.

10The span of our life is seventy years,

perhaps in strength | even eighty;

     yet the sum of them is but labor and sorrow,

     for they pass away quickly and | we are gone.

11Who regards the power | of your wrath?

     Who rightly fears your | indignation?]

12So teach us to num- | ber our days

     that we may apply our | hearts to wisdom.   R

 Second Reading                                                                                 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11

Though we do not know and cannot calculate the day of Christ's return, we live faithfully in the here and now as we anticipate the day when we will be given eternal salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anything written to you. 2For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3When they say, "There is peace and security," then sudden destruction will come upon them, as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and there will be no escape! 4But you, beloved, are not in darkness, for that day to surprise you like a thief; 5for you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. 6So then let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober; 7for those who sleep sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night. 8But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, and put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. 9For God has destined us not for wrath but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live with him. 11Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing.

 Gospel                                                                                                    Matthew 25:14-30
Jesus tells a parable about his second coming, indicating that it is not sufficient merely to maintain things as they are. Those who await his return should make good use of the gifts that God has provided them.

14For it is as if a man, going on a journey, summoned his slaves and entrusted his property to them; 15to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. 16The one who had received the five talents went off at once and traded with them, and made five more talents. 17In the same way, the one who had the two talents made two more talents. 18But the one who had received the one talent went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's money. 19After a long time the master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them. 20Then the one who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five more talents, saying, 'Master, you handed over to me five talents; see, I have made five more talents.' 21His master said to him, 'Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.' 22And the one with the two talents also came forward, saying, 'Master, you handed over to me two talents; see, I have made two more talents.' 23His master said to him, 'Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.' 24Then the one who had received the one talent also came forward, saying, 'Master, I knew that you were a harsh man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed; 25so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.' 26But his master replied, 'You wicked and lazy slave! You knew, did you, that I reap where I did not sow, and gather where I did not scatter? 27Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have received what was my own with interest. 28So take the talent from him, and give it to the one with the ten talents. 29For to all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away. 30As for this worthless slave, throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'

 Thought for the Day:

Empowered by God — Responding by Grace

“Now as you excel in everything — in faith,

in speech, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness,

and in our love for you — so we want you to

excel also in this generous undertaking” (2 Cor. 8:7).

Next Sunday at Bethany:

 On Sunday, November 16 we will be entering into our annual stewardship emphasis entitled, “Empowered by God — Responding by Grace.” During this time, we will consider how God has empowered us and how our response, by grace through faith, can be used by God, especially through the ministry here at Bethany Lutheran Church.

 Just what does it mean to be empowered by God? The Lord Jesus said that his disciples would receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon them (Acts 1:8). That not only happened as he said it would, but we, too, receive God’s power by grace through our faith in Christ as the Holy Spirit takes up residence in us.

 As we experience God’s power through faith in Christ, our hearts respond. Our response begins with the realization that God owns everything. God is our Source. God is the Creator and Sustainer of life. God is the Provider of all that we have, whether it is life itself, the air we breathe, water which sustains us, or financial resources through which we obtain the necessities of life. On a daily basis, God demonstrates again and again his abundant power as he “richly provides us with everything” (1 Tim. 6:17).

 And what should be our response to God’s provision for us? According to 2 Corinthians 8:7, we respond by “faith,” implicitly trusting God to provide all that we need. We respond by “speech,” sharing the good news of the Gospel with others. We respond by “knowledge” through the study of God’s Word. We respond in “complete earnestness,” that is, through a demonstration of the sincerity of our love for the Lord. And we respond by excelling in the “grace of giving.”

 As an example of what it means to give by grace, the Apostle Paul points to the Christians at Macedonia. These were poor people — dirt poor, poor as the proverbial church mice — who were commended by Paul for giving beyond their ability to give. How could they do that? The answer is found in 2 Corinthians 8:5 — “ . . .  they gave themselves first to the Lord.” Giving does not begin with the movement of the hand to the wallet, purse or pocketbook. Giving begins in the heart.

 In fact, this principle goes back to God’s instruction to Moses in Exodus 25:2, “ . . . from all whose hearts prompt them to give you shall receive the offering for me.” This principle is still in operation today. As we give our time, talents and treasure to the Lord, we do so by God’s grace because we have already given our hearts to God.

 “Empowered by God — Responding by Grace.” That was true of the Macedonian Christians. May it also be true of us here at Bethany.

 Sunday, there will be special Youth Sunday Lessons, Message and Prayers.

We also remember our Veterans who have served our nation faithfully through war and peace!
