[Bethany Lutheran Church] From Sunday: the Confirmation class's Psalm 148

Dear sisters and brothers of Bethany,

Some of you asked for a copy of the "Mad Libs" psalm from Sunday morning! Here it is, for your enjoyment. I've also included the "mad libs" form, so you could write your own.

Thank you to Emily Bromley and Caleb Smith for reading it during worship!

Peace,

Pr. Carrie

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord from New York; praise him in Pakistan!

Praise him, all his walruses;

praise him, all his quadricorns!

Praise him, astronauts and Pluto,

praise him, all you slimy planets!

Praise him, you dry Mars, and you dogs above Mars!

Let them praise the name of the Lord, for he commanded and they were created.He established them forever and ever; he fixed their bounds, which cannot be passed.

Praise the Lord from the basement, you narwals and all deeps, glasses and ham, car and floor, cold tables fulfilling his command!

Quartz and all mountains, Venus flytraps and cacti!

Shiny animals and all monkeys, sparkling things and slapping birds!

Potatoes of the earth and all boards, octopi and all cows of the earth!

Pineapple-y men and women alike, scary and colorful together!

Let them praise the name of the Lord, for his name alone is exalted; his glory is above earth and heaven.

He has raised up a tuba for his people, praise for all his faithful, for the people of Portugal who are close to him.

Praise the Lord!

[Bethany Lutheran Church] REMINDER: Town Hall meeting tomorrow, Tues. April 30 at 7 pm

Dear Bethany members,

Please remember that tomorrow night, Tuesday April 30th at 7 pm is a "town hall meeting" (or maybe a "community forum"?) to discuss a proposal that was brought to the Bethany Church Council. We will meet in Luther Hall.

The proposal under consideration is to institute a separate education hour on Sunday mornings, between worship services. This hour would be used for adult education and fellowship as well as Sunday School.

As a way of beginning this discussion, a smaller group from the Church Council has suggested some questions to consider tomorrow night. They include:

1. Bethany struggles in retaining children past confirmation age. How could we improve that?

2. Is it important for children to attend worship and become acculturated to the Lutheran service and liturgy? Are we concerned that many Bethany children reach confirmation age without ever having attended worship services?

3. Is it important for Bethany to offer adult education opportunities? Is it important for adult Christians to continue to learn?

4. Would you be interested in more education about Lutheranism, other religions/denominations? Would you appreciate more speakers from outside Bethany?

5.  If Bethany switched to a Sunday morning schedule with a Christian education hour in between services, what would work well? What would be more difficult?

These are just starting points for discussion. It's also important to know that no decisions will be made at tomorrow's meeting! This is the beginning of a conversation.

If you cannot attend tomorrow, please plan to attend on Sunday, May 5th at 10:15 am in the downstairs community room.

Questions? Please contact Pr. Carrie at carrie.smith@bethanylc.com or Council President Bethany Gola at bethanygola@att.net

Peace,

Pastor Carrie Smith

[Bethany Lutheran Church] Family Game Night

This event reminder is from Bethany Lutheran Church

Family Game Night(View Online)
When: Sat, Apr 27, 2013, 6:30p - 8:30p
Where: Bethany Lutheran
RSVP: Click here to indicate if you will attend or not

Come one, come all to Bethany's All Ages Family Game Night!

If you are finding it hard in today's busy schedules to spend quality time with your families, you aren't alone!  That's why we need to set aside specific times to gather as a family, pray as a family, and yes, have fun as a family.  Bethany wants to help you with that job, which is why we are starting Family Game Night.

We'll meet downstairs in the community room at Bethany, where we will have board games, card games, and maybe even some Wii video games set up at different stations for you and your kids.  We'll have games for all ages ranging from Chutes & Ladders and Uno to Monopoly and Settlers of Cattan for the more serious gamers. We'll even provide some snacks to munch on.  :)

We are using the word "Family" in God's sense (the biggest sense possible!), so whether you are a mother, a Grandmother, an uncle, or just looking to connect more with your church family, let us know that you are coming by RSVP'ing to Member Connect or emailing Pastor Paul (paul.cannon@bethanylc.com).

If you would like to volunteer setting up or if you have a favorite family game you'd like to share, please let us know that as well!

Blessings and Happy Gaming!

Pr. Paul

Wednesday Words for April 24, 2013

From Pastor Carrie Smith

Thought for the Day:

What, do you wish to know your Lord’s meaning in this thing? Know it well, love was his meaning. Who reveals it to you? Love. What did he reveal to you? Love. Why does he reveal it to you? For love. Remain in this, and you will know more of the same.

Julian of Norwich, 14th C. mystic

Fruits of Faith Garden Planting: Well the time has come for us to start work on the garden! Where is the garden located you ask?Good question! It is at 4522 Barreville Road. This is in the Prairie Grove area. It is east of 31 and just north of 176 about a mile.

Pending weather, work on the garden will start Saturday, April 27. Here are the items to be worked on:

1. Roto Tilling - We have a small roto tiller at the garden, but if any of you have a personal one that you would like to use that would be great. This job of course can only be done if it quits raining and the field dries out a bit.

2. Work up the soil in each of the square foot plots

3. Mark the grid work on each square according to what we will be planting

4. General clean up

5. We will start the planting process on Saturday, May 4th. We will plant every weekend until we are done. Items such as tomatoes and peppers will be planted last after we are confident there will not be a frost. Continue to watch for emails and feel free to recruit friends and neighbors that you think might like to help. Remember, all that we grow is given to the Crystal Lake Food Pantry!

In Christ, Pam Bock815-245-0087 or thebocks@prodigy.net

This Week’s Texts:  5th Sunday of Easter

Prayer of the Day:

O Lord God,

you teach us that without love, our actions gain nothing.

Pour into our hearts your most excellent gift of love,

that, made alive by your Spirit, we may know goodness and peace,

through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and forever. Amen.

First Reading: Acts 11:1-18

Now the apostles and the believers who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also accepted the word of God. 2So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticized him, 3saying, "Why did you go to uncircumcised men and eat with them?" 4Then Peter began to explain it to them, step by step, saying, 5I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision. There was something like a large sheet coming down from heaven, being lowered by its four corners; and it came close to me. 6As I looked at it closely I saw four-footed animals, beasts of prey, reptiles, and birds of the air. 7I also heard a voice saying to me, 'Get up, Peter; kill and eat.' 8But I replied, 'By no means, Lord; for nothing profane or unclean has ever entered my mouth.' 9But a second time the voice answered from heaven, 'What God has made clean, you must not call profane.' 10This happened three times; then everything was pulled up again to heaven. 11At that very moment three men, sent to me from Caesarea, arrived at the house where we were. 12The Spirit told me to go with them and not to make a distinction between them and us. These six brothers also accompanied me, and we entered the man's house. 13He told us how he had seen the angel standing in his house and saying, 'Send to Joppa and bring Simon, who is called Peter; 14he will give you a message by which you and your entire household will be saved.' 15And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them just as it had upon us at the beginning. 16And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said, 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.' 17If then God gave them the same gift that he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could hinder God?" 18When they heard this, they were silenced. And they praised God, saying, "Then God has given even to the Gentiles the repentance that leads to life."

Psalm 148

1Hallelujah! Praise the LORD | from the heavens;

     praise God | in the heights.

2Praise the LORD, | all you angels;

     sing praise, all you | hosts of heaven.

3Praise the LORD, | sun and moon;

     sing praise, all you | shining stars.

4Praise the LORD, heav- | en of heavens,

     and you waters a- | bove the heavens.

5Let them praise the name | of the LORD,

     who commanded, and they | were created,

6who made them stand fast forev- | er and ever,

     giving them a law that shall not | pass away.   R

7Praise the LORD | from the earth,

     you sea monsters | and all deeps;

8fire and hail, | snow and fog,

     tempestuous wind, do- | ing God's will;

9mountains | and all hills,

     fruit trees | and all cedars;

10wild beasts | and all cattle,

     creeping things and | flying birds;

11sovereigns of the earth | and all peoples,

     princes and all rulers | of the world;

12young | men and maidens,

     old and | young together.   R

13Let them praise the name | of the LORD,

     whose name only is exalted, whose splendor is over | earth and heaven.

14The LORD has raised up strength for the people

and praise for all | faithful servants,

     the children of Israel, a people who are near the LORD. | Hallelujah!   R

Second Reading: Revelation 21:1-6

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,
"See, the home of God is among mortals.
He will dwell with them;
they will be his peoples,
and God himself will be with them;
4he will wipe every tear from their eyes.
Death will be no more;
mourning and crying and pain will be no more,
for the first things have passed away."
5And the one who was seated on the throne said, "See, I am making all things new." Also he said, "Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true." 6Then he said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life.

Gospel: John 13:31-35

31When he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. 32If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. 33Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, 'Where I am going, you cannot come.' 34I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. 35By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."

[Bethany Lutheran Church] Town Hall Meetings Coming Soon!

Good morning, Bethany Lutheran!

Recently the Bethany Church Council received a proposal from the Christian Ed Ministry Team to create an Education Hour in between services on Sunday mornings.

The Council would like to hear the thoughts of the community on this topic, so we are holding two "Town Hall Meeting" events in the coming weeks.

Please plan to join us on one or both of these dates:

Tuesday, April 30 at 7 pm (Luther Hall)

or

Sunday, May 5 at 10:15 am (Basement Community Room)

The purpose of these meetings will be to discuss in a general way the idea of having an education hour for adults and children on Sunday mornings between worship times. Questions for reflection and discussion will be provided in a later e-mail and will be used to guide the meeting.

If you have any questions, please contact Pr. Carrie at carrie.smith@bethanylc.com or Council President Bethany Gola at bethanygola@att.net

[Bethany Lutheran Church] Wednesday Words for April 17, 2013

Wednesday Words for April 17, 2013

from Pastor Carrie Smith

Thought for the Day:

“Brand New Mourning” by the Rev. Dr. Kwasi Kena

We never know what each new day will bring.

We hope for joy and peace

Or at least the comfort

Of predictable routine.

We're never prepared

For the intrusion of

Evil

Acted out through

Harm and mayhem.

When death rips life

From our grasp,

When horror blurs

Our sight,

Have mercy on us, Lord.

Hold our aching souls

Guide us through

Dizzying grief,

Listen to our wailing "Why?"

Be the Comfort we may not even know we need

As we live through this brand new mourning. Amen.

In the wake of the bombings at the Boston Marathon, the Rev. Mark S. Hanson, ELCA presiding bishop, offered the following prayer:

      "Oh God, in Jesus name we renounce the forces of evil and the disruptive power of violence. With all those who suffer, we cry out for mercy and healing, by your spirit join us together into one community of compassion and courage. Do not let fear hold us captive. Give us faith to trust your promise that nothing in all creation will separate us from your love in Christ Jesus. For all who care for the wounded, we give thanks and pray that you will give them strength. For all who mourn, give the comfort of your peace. In the name of the risen Christ we pray, amen."

     The ELCA New England Synod, based in Worcester, Mass., is a member of the Massachusetts Council of Churches, which offered a statement in response to the bombing in Boston. The statement is available at http://masscouncilofchurches.wordpress.com/.

This Week’s Texts: The Fourth Sunday of Easter

Acts 9:36-43

Now in Joppa there was a disciple whose name was Tabitha, which in Greek is Dorcas. She was devoted to good works and acts of charity. At that time she became ill and died. When they had washed her, they laid her in a room upstairs. Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, who heard that Peter was there, sent two men to him with the request, “Please come to us without delay.” So Peter got up and went with them; and when he arrived, they took him to the room upstairs. All the widows stood beside him, weeping and showing tunics and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was with them. Peter put all of them outside, and then he knelt down and prayed. He turned to the body and said, “Tabitha, get up.” Then she opened her eyes, and seeing Peter, she sat up. He gave her his hand and helped her up. Then calling the saints and widows, he showed her to be alive. This became known throughout Joppa, and many believed in the Lord. Meanwhile he stayed in Joppa for some time with a certain Simon, a tanner.

Psalm 23

(Every year, I am obligated to give you my favorite musical version of this psalm—the theme song from the BBC television show “The Vicar of Dibley”!)

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.

He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters;

he restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff— they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long.

Revelation 7:9-17

After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!” And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, singing, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”

Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from?” I said to him, “Sir, you are the one that knows.” Then he said to me, “These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

John 10:22-30

At that time the festival of the Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of Solomon. So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.” Jesus answered, “I have told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name testify to me; but you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep. My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand. What my Father has given me is greater than all else, and no one can snatch it out of the Father’s hand. The Father and I are one.”

Peace,
