[Bethany Lutheran Church] Help needed for Epiphany worship (this Sunday!)

Calling all wise ones!

I am in need of 3 "Wise Men" for each service on Sunday. You do not need to be a man (or wise!) to fill the part!

You would be asked to wear a robe and crown and process in at the beginning of the service. You will read one short line from Isaiah. After the opening hymn, you may exit and remove the robe, and then worship as usual.

Are you willing to be a "Wise Man" this Sunday? If so, please respond ASAP with the service you will attend, and I'll send you more instructions!
Thanks!
Peace,

Pr. Carrie

[Bethany Lutheran Church] Merry Christmas! and your Bethany Newsletter

Scroll down to find the link to your Bethany weekly newsletter!

Merry Christmas Bethany Lutheran Church!

The twelve days of Christmas are almost upon us! In most traditions Christmas Day marks the beginning of the twelve days of Christmas (usually ending on January 5th, or Epiphany Sunday).  Most of you are probably familiar with this part of the church season because of the old Christmas Carol “The 12 Days of Christmas” that starts with “a partridge in a pear tree” and ends with “twelve drummers drumming” (extra credit if you know the rest of the verses by heart!

For a church staff, the twelve days of Christmas are the most highly anticipated time of the year – not because we really like swans-a-swimming, maids-a-milking, or alliteration in general – but because we are in dire need of some rest & relaxation (I guess some alliteration can’t hurt).   With all the hoopla and fanfare of the Christmas season, what a church staff longs for the most is a little bit of peace and quiet.

With that in mind, we hope you enjoy the twelve days of Christmas – Bethany staff style! Below is our top-twelve list of things we are most looking forward to during this season.

#12 – Twelve days of quiet: We love all kids that come through our doors here at Bethany, but put a little sugar and caffeine in them, and things can get a little … loud.

#11 – Vacation Time: We’ve had visions of – no, not sugar plums – but bulletins dancing through our heads.

#10 – No Meetings: Did you think you were the only one that doesn’t care for late nights at church?

#9 – Reading Novels: Yes, we love to read the Bible!  It’s also good to mix it up a bit.

#8 – Time with Family:  It’s been a busy Christmas Season and we can't wait to see our loved ones ... and maybe receive some gifts.

#7 – Sweatpants and Slippers:  The only thing better than a hot cup of cocoa in front of the fireplace on a snowy day is a hot cup of cocoa in front of the fireplace while wearing sweatpants and slippers.

#6 – Sleeping In:  The one thing we all asked Santa for this year.

#5 – After Christmas Sales: One of the benefits of working Christmas Eve is that you often have a late Christmas with your loved ones.

#4 – No Email: Okay, we might still answer some emails, but we’ll check it far less often!

#3 – Shenanigans with Friends: Guess who submitted this one?  Hint: His name rhymes with Master Fall.

#2 – Games with the Family: Nothing brings out the competitive juices like Monopoly with the family.

#1 –Time With our Church Family: Vacation is great, but we still love worshipping with you all!

Have a very Merry Christmas!

[Bethany Lutheran Church] Wednesday Words & Bethany Newsletter for December 18

Wednesday Words for December 18, 2013

From Pastor Carrie Smith

Scroll down for the link to your Bethany Weekly Newsletter. Enjoy!

Thought for the Day: Not celebrate?

Your burden is too great to bear?

Your loneliness is intensified during this Christmas season?

Your tears have no end?

Not celebrate?

You should lead the celebration!

You should run through the streets

to ring the bells and sing the loudest!

You should fling the tinsel on the tree,

and open your house to your neighbors, and call them in to dance!

For it is you above all others who know the joy of Advent.

It is unto you that a Savior is born this day,

One who comes to lift your burden from your shoulders,

One who comes to wipe the tears from your eyes.

You are not alone,

for He is born this day to you.

-         Ann Weems, “Kneeling in Bethlehem”

Tonight at Bethany: It’s not really the longest night of the year (that happens in a few days) but tonight we will gather for a service called “The Longest Night”. This is an opportunity to gather and lift up those concerns weighing heavy on our hearts at this time of year. Are you grieving? Dealing with a medical diagnosis? Does Christmas bring up difficult memories from the past? Join us at 7 pm for a chance to give those concerns over to God. We will write our prayers on paper stars and hang them on the “Tree of Hope”, where they will remain during Christmas Eve services. All are welcome.

Sunday at Bethany: Wow—it’s already the 4th Sunday of Advent! Each week the joy and anticipation have increased. Each week, we draw closer to the day we celebrate the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ. This week, expect the sanctuary to be awash in poinsettias. All four Advent candles will be lit, and we’ll sing those last few Advent hymns before Christmas Eve arrives.

The Bethany Adult Choir will sing for us at 8:30 am, and the Sonshine Singers will lift our spirits at 10:30 am. As a congregation, we’ll sing “Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus”, “O Come, O Come Emmanuel”, “The Angel Gabriel, “Of the Father’s Love Begotten”, and “The King Shall Come”. See you on Sunday!

End-of-the-Year Giving: Each year, we rely on a generous Christmas offering to meet our budget obligations. As you consider your end of the year giving, please remember your church! All gifts are tax-deductible. Please help us end the year in a strong financial position, ready to look ahead to new ministry opportunities in 2014. You can give on Christmas Eve (5, 7, and 10:30 pm) or you can mail a check to the church:

Bethany Lutheran Church

76 W. Crystal Lake Avenue

Crystal Lake, IL 60014

Thank you for your generosity!

From Hannah’s family: “The Ayares/ Sorenson family would like to thank those who helped us achieve a dream trip to Disney World for our daughter Hannah, as well as the rest of our family. Your kindness and generosity have truly touched our hearts. We feel so welcomed by the whole congregation. This unexpected outpouring from the church is appreciated beyond measure.  Without you it would have been immensely difficult to see her dream come true.  Peace be with you and your loved ones this holiday season, and thank you again.”

This Week’s Texts: 4th Sunday of Advent

Prayer of the Day

Stir up your power, Lord Christ, and come.

With your abundant grace and might,

free us from the sin that hinders our faith,

that eagerly we may receive your promises,

for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and forever. Amen.

FIRST READING      Isaiah 7:10–16

10Again the LORD spoke to Ahaz, saying, 11Ask a sign of the LORD your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven. 12But Ahaz said, I will not ask, and I will not put the LORD to the test. 13Then Isaiah said: "Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals, that you weary my God also? 14Therefore the LORD himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel. 15He shall eat curds and honey by the time he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. 16For before the child knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land before whose two kings you are in dread will be deserted.

PSALM (ELW)          Psalm 80:1–7, 17–19

1Hear, O Shepherd of Israel, leading Joseph | like a flock;

     shine forth, you that are enthroned up- | on the cherubim.

2In the presence of Ephraim, Benjamin, | and Manasseh,

     stir up your strength and | come to help us.

3Restore | us, O God;

     let your face shine upon us, and we | shall be saved.

4O LORD | God of hosts,

     how long will your anger fume when your | people pray?   R

5You have fed them with the | bread of tears;

     you have given them bowls of | tears to drink.

6You have made us the derision | of our neighbors,

     and our enemies laugh | us to scorn.

7Restore us, O | God of hosts;

     let your face shine upon us, and we | shall be saved.

17Let your hand be upon the one at | your right hand,

     the one you have made so strong | for yourself.

18And so will we never turn a- | way from you;

     give us life, that we may call up- | on your name.

19Restore us, O LORD | God of hosts;

     let your face shine upon us, and we | shall be saved.   R

SECOND READING            Romans 1:1–7

Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy scriptures, 3the gospel concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh 4and was declared to be Son of God with power according to the spirit of holiness by resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, 5through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for the sake of his name, 6including yourselves who are called to belong to Jesus Christ,

7To all God's beloved in Rome, who are called to be saints:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

GOSPEL         Matthew 1:18–25

18Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. 20But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." 22All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet:

23"Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,

and they shall name him Emmanuel," which means, "God is with us." 24When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, 25but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus.

Thought for the Day: Who are the prophets?

Who are the prophets?

They are a royal people,

Who penetrate mystery

And see with the spirit’s eyes.

In illuminating darkness they speak out.

They are living, penetrating clarity.

They are a blossom blooming only

On the shoot that is rooted in the flood of light.

Tonight at Bethany:Join us for Evening Prayer with a visit from St. Lucy at 7 pm! This is a short, contemplative, candlelit service, an opportunity to rejuvenate in the middle of a busy week and a busier Advent season. The Anderson and Bradshaw families have been working on a creative way to present information about St. Lucy, who is remembered in many Scandinavian Lutheran communities. You can read a bit about her here.

Sunday at Bethany: It’s the 3rd Sunday of Advent, which means we are inching closer to the glorious celebration of Christmas! As the day approaches, our worship becomes more filled with expectation and joy. We’ll sing “People Look East, the Time is Near” to begin worship, and we’ll end with “Joy to the World!”

Remember to make a stop at the prayer wall (aka the art wall) at the entrance to the worship space. Add your prayer, and lift up the needs of others. For what do you wait in hope? What darkness does the light of Christ need to come and banish?

Between services, stay in your seats for a special congregational meeting regarding our new constitution.

Click here to read the current constitution.

And click here to read the proposed constitution.

Then, come back for the joyous telling of the Christmas Story by our Sunday School children at 4 pm. This year’s Children’s Christmas Program will be followed by a cookie and punch reception. Don’t miss this chance to support our youngest members, and to hear again the story of Jesus’ birth!

Have you turned in your pledge yet? Your Finance Team is feverishly working to complete the 2013 budget, and they need YOUR PLEDGE to make it work! You can send your intentions for giving to Financial.Secretary@bethanylc.com or mail it to the church at 76 W. Crystal Lake Ave, CL 60014.

Mark your calendar: Next Wednesday, December 18 at 7 pm is our “Longest Night” worship service. This is a contemplative worship service designed especially for those who might be grieving or struggling with a health issue this season. We will gather to sing, hear Scripture, and hang paper star ornaments representing our prayers on a special Christmas tree. Invite neighbors or friends who might benefit from this worship opportunity.

The ELCA has a new website! Have you checked it out yet? http://www.elca.org/

This Week’s Texts: 3rd Sunday of Advent

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Stir up the wills of all who look to you, Lord God,

and strengthen our faith in your coming,

that, transformed by grace, we may walk in your way;

through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and forever. Amen.

FIRST READING     Isaiah 35:1–10

The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad,

the desert shall rejoice and blossom;

like the crocus 2it shall blossom abundantly,

and rejoice with joy and singing.

The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it,

the majesty of Carmel and Sharon.

They shall see the glory of the LORD,

the majesty of our God.

3Strengthen the weak hands,

and make firm the feeble knees.

4Say to those who are of a fearful heart,

"Be strong, do not fear!

Here is your God.

He will come with vengeance,

with terrible recompense.

He will come and save you."

5Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened,

and the ears of the deaf unstopped;

6then the lame shall leap like a deer,

and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy.

For waters shall break forth in the wilderness,

and streams in the desert;

7the burning sand shall become a pool,

and the thirsty ground springs of water;

the haunt of jackals shall become a swamp,

the grass shall become reeds and rushes.

8A highway shall be there,

and it shall be called the Holy Way;

the unclean shall not travel on it,

but it shall be for God's people;

no traveler, not even fools, shall go astray.

9No lion shall be there,

nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it;

they shall not be found there,

but the redeemed shall walk there.

10And the ransomed of the LORD shall return,

and come to Zion with singing;

everlasting joy shall be upon their heads;

they shall obtain joy and gladness,

and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

PSALM (ELW)          Psalm 146:5–10

5Happy are they who have the God of Jacob | for their help,

     whose hope is in the | LORD their God;

6who made heaven and earth, the seas, and all that | is in them;

     who keeps promis- | es forever;

7who gives justice to those who are oppressed,

and food to | those who hunger.

     The LORD sets the | captive free.

8The LORD opens the eyes of the blind; the LORD lifts up those who | are bowed down;

     the LORD | loves the righteous.   R

9The LORD cares | for the stranger;

     the LORD sustains the orphan and widow,

     but frustrates the way | of the wicked.

10The LORD shall | reign forever,

     your God, O Zion, throughout all generations. | Hallelujah!   R

PSALM (ELW) (ALTERNATE)     Luke 1:46b–55

My spirit rejoices in God my Savior. (Luke 1:47)

46b"My soul proclaims the greatness | of the Lord,

     47my spirit rejoices in | God my Savior,

48for you, Lord, have looked with favor on your | lowly servant.

     From this day all generations will | call me blessed:

49you, the Almighty, have done great | things for me

     and holy | is your name.

50You have mercy on | those who fear you,

     from generation to | generation.   R

51You have shown strength | with your arm

     and scattered the proud in | their conceit,

52casting down the mighty | from their thrones

     and lifting | up the lowly.

53You have filled the hungry | with good things

     and sent the rich | away empty.

54You have come to the aid of your | servant Israel,

     to remember the prom- | ise of mercy,

55the promise made | to our forbears,

     to Abraham and his chil- | dren forever."   R

SECOND READING           James 5:7–10

7Be patient, therefore, beloved, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious crop from the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains. 8You also must be patient. Strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near. 9Beloved, do not grumble against one another, so that you may not be judged. See, the Judge is standing at the doors! 10As an example of suffering and patience, beloved, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.

GOSPEL       Matthew 11:2–11

2When John heard in prison what the Messiah was doing, he sent word by his disciples 3and said to him, "Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?" 4Jesus answered them, "Go and tell John what you hear and see: 5the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them. 6And blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me."

7As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind? 8What then did you go out to see? Someone dressed in soft robes? Look, those who wear soft robes are in royal palaces. 9What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10This is the one about whom it is written,

'See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,

who will prepare your way before you.'

11Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one has arisen greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

When will he come

Tonight at Bethany: Join us at 7 p.m. for a midweek Advent worship opportunity. We’ll be singing Evening Prayer from the ELW, and in place of a sermon we’ll have a presentation by the Bradshaw family on the “Real St. Nick” – Bishop Nicholas of Myra! I have it on good authority that the bishop himself is showing up. Also, there just might be chocolate. J If that doesn’t get you to church, I don’t know what will!

Sunday at Bethany: It’s the second Sunday of Advent! We’ll be lighting another candle, hanging another banner, and the arts team will be expanding the visual interpretation of our hope and longing for the birth of Jesus, light of the world. Advent hymns will include “Prepare the Royal Highway”, “Rejoice, Rejoice Believers”, and “Blessed Be the God of Israel”. At both services we will be blessed by the music of the Bell Canto bell choir. Don’t forget to stop at the Prayer Wall to write down your prayers and to pray for others! What are you waiting in hope for this season?

Sunday afternoon: Välkommen! It’s time for the Swedish Children’s Choir! This festive Christmas concert takes place at 3 p.m. here at Bethany, followed by a Swedish dinner (dinner is by reservations only). Come and celebrate one bit of Bethany’s heritage!

Another Advent Calendar! Are you looking for another way to keep the sense of waiting and expectation this season? Here’s a cool calendar from the Center for Christianity, Culture, and the Arts: http://ccca.biola.edu/advent/

The Giving Season: Are you a Thrivent member? Up to December 31, Thrivent will match your giving 2:1 to Lutheran Disaster Response http://www.elca.org/Our-Work/Relief-and-Development/Lutheran-Disaster-Response  or Lutheran World Relief.  http://lwr.org/

Bethany Christmas Postcards: By now, you should have received a special postcard invitation to the upcoming Bethany Christmas services. We have many extras, to be used as invitations to worship! Please grab a few from the Information Table and pass them out to friends, neighbors, and colleagues. Help spread the news that Hope is Born in Jesus Christ!

This Week’s Texts: 2nd Sunday of Advent

Stir up our hearts, Lord God, to prepare the way of your only Son.

By his coming nurture our growth as people of repentance and peace;

through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and forever. Amen.

FIRST READING

Isaiah 11:1–10

In today's reading the prophet describes the ideal ruler who will come in the future as a green shoot springing from a dead stump (David's royal line) of Jesse (David's father). Gifted by the Spirit, this messiah will seek justice for the poor, and the reign of this monarch will be experienced as paradise regained.

A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse,
and a branch shall grow out of his roots.
2The spirit of the LORD shall rest on him,
the spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the spirit of counsel and might,
the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.
3His delight shall be in the fear of the LORD.
He shall not judge by what his eyes see,
or decide by what his ears hear;
4but with righteousness he shall judge the poor,
and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;
he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,
and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.
5Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist,
and faithfulness the belt around his loins.
6The wolf shall live with the lamb,
the leopard shall lie down with the kid,
the calf and the lion and the fatling together,
and a little child shall lead them.
7The cow and the bear shall graze,
their young shall lie down together;
and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
8The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp,
and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder's den.
9They will not hurt or destroy
on all my holy mountain;
for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD
as the waters cover the sea.
10On that day the root of Jesse shall stand as a signal to the peoples; the nations shall inquire of him, and his dwelling shall be glorious.

PSALM (ELW)

Psalm 72:1–7, 18–19

May the righteous flourish; let there be an abundance of peace. (Ps. 72:7)

1Give the king your jus- | tice, O God,

     and your righteousness to | the king's son;

2that he may rule your | people righteously

     and the | poor with justice;

3that the mountains may bring prosperity | to the people,

     and the | hills, in righteousness.

4Let him defend the needy a- | mong the people,

     rescue the poor, and crush | the oppressor.   R

5May he live as long as the sun and | moon endure,

     from one generation | to another.

6Let him come down like rain upon | the mown field,

     like showers that wa- | ter the earth.

7In his time may the | righteous flourish;

     and let there be an abundance of peace till the moon shall | be no more.

18Blessed are you, LORD God, the | God of Israel;

     you alone do | wondrous deeds!

19And blessed be your glorious | name forever,

     and may all the earth be filled with your glory. A- | men. Amen.   R

SECOND READING

Romans 15:4–13

God's promise to include Gentiles within the circle of God's blessed people has been fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Christians live out their unity by welcoming and encouraging each other just as Christ has welcomed them into God's family.

4For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, so that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. 5May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus, 6so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
7Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. 8For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the circumcised on behalf of the truth of God in order that he might confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, 9and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written,
"Therefore I will confess you among the Gentiles,
and sing praises to your name";
10and again he says,
"Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people";
11and again,
"Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles,
and let all the peoples praise him";
12and again Isaiah says,
"The root of Jesse shall come,
the one who rises to rule the Gentiles;
in him the Gentiles shall hope."
13May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

GOSPEL

Matthew 3:1–12

Just before Jesus begins his public ministry, John the Baptist appears, calling people to mend their ways and speaking of a powerful one who is to come.

In those days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, 2"Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near." 3This is the one of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke when he said,
"The voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
'Prepare the way of the Lord,
make his paths straight.'"
4Now John wore clothing of camel's hair with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. 5Then the people of Jerusalem and all Judea were going out to him, and all the region along the Jordan,6and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.
7But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8Bear fruit worthy of repentance. 9Do not presume to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our ancestor'; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. 10Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
11I baptize you with water for repentance, but one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."
